Matthew Upson is a data scientist specialising in machine learning and working with data derived from documents. After a few years in academia, Matthew was one of the first data scientists recruited into the UK Government. Initially at the Department for Education, and later at the Government Digital Service, Matthew led the move towards improving the way Government produces statistics through automation, and worked on some of the first implementations of machine learning in UK Government, including the first deployment of deep learning to GOV.UK.
Matthew left GDS to lead a team at a legal tech startup delivering a system to extract insights from thousands of legal contracts, before starting his own company specialising in machine learning and Natural Language Processing (NLP).
